Dear Editor;
In your Editorial “Cancer: A Few Simple Steps” ended with the sentence “While there is little an individual may be able to do about exposure to carcinogens in the environment , a few simple preventive steps could make the difference.”
Why is it that “there is little an individual may be able to do about exposure to carcinogens in the environment “.
If our government discovered that terrorists were poisoning our food, water, land and air with cancer causing chemicals, carcinogens, chemicals so poisonous that safe drinking water standards allow for less than a part per billion. ( One part per billion is like having one dollar bill in a pile of a billion other dollar bills.)
What would they do? Would they call out the National Guard, the CIA, the FBI, Counter intelligence, Oliver North, John Poindexter, the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines?
That's what they did after 9-11 to protect our airports, and train stations. I don't believe our government has solved the problem of protecting our Nuclear reactors like Mill Stone from becoming killing machines, or weapons of mass destruction if a plane is flown into them.
Yet our food, water, land and air are being allowed to be poisoned by corporate terrorists. Corporations who are allowed and even encouraged to make money from the pouring of these poisons into our food, water, land and air.
This country got along fine without these poisons before world war two. We grew crops organically, our golf courses and schools and lawns where maintained without the us of deadly chemical poisons.
Right now in New York State, I can only try to stop someone from poisoning my well water only after they have succeeded in poisoning my well, after my well is poisoned. That’s the law. The law has been written for corporate greed and by a government and court system that fails to protect the publics health from cancer causing chemicals. The laws and our government fail to protect us from local acts of terrorism.
What can we do to get the poisons out of our environment?
What are “ a few simple preventive steps could make the difference.”?
Tell your schools to find non toxic methods for ground maintenance and pest control.
Tell your local government to only support and enter into contracts for services with companies who are using methods that will not add poisons to our community, including nurseries and landscapers.
Only support local agriculture that are trying to reduce and and eliminate the use of agricultural poisons.
Tell your local vineyards to follow the great French vineyards who are organic or biodynamic. Tell them to change how they grow grapes and start reducing and finally eliminate the use of poisons.
Tell your neighbors to only use landscapers, nurseries and maintenance people; who will not use poisons.
And Tell the East Hampton Star and other media outlets to do stories about how people can kick the poison habit.
